Bending and processing aluminium profiles for the aerospace industry

YueFeng prefers to deliver a complete component to the aerospace industry. So besides precision extrusion, machining, and surface treatment, we also perform other processes in house, such as assembling, bending, brushing, belt grinding, sealing, soldering, welding, and masking. With our knowledge and experience, we know how to apply the right technology for each aerospace product, using processes that are all available in house. We assume full responsibility for your components, which is something that is appreciated by our aerospace customers such as Diehl, B/E, Thales, and EADS.

Bending profiles for the aerospace industry

Proper bending of aluminium and magnesium requires specific knowledge of the materials. The phase in the process in which the material is bent is also crucial to the final result – right after pressing or only after hardening, for example. There are many techniques for bending profiles for the aerospace industry, such as roll forming, press brake bending, swivel bending, deep drawing, stretch forming, and 3D bending.
Assuming responsibility for aerospace customers

In addition to the previously mentioned processes, there are other techniques we can use as needed. If we do not have a speciality in house, we call upon the expertise of one of our regular partners. YueFeng prefers to take responsibility from start to finish when it comes to the development and production of aluminium and magnesium profiles for our aerospace customers. Our specific knowledge and experience of precision extrusion, surface treatment, machining, and all the other processes results in an optimum product. And, of course, transparency for our customers. If you would like to find out what we can offer the aerospace industry, feel free to visit YueFeng or attend one of our masterclasses.

Component supplier for the aerospace industry

YueFeng is happy to take on the responsibility for the entire process when developing and producing aluminium and magnesium components. Our technology, knowledge, and experience enable us to produce highly complex profiles made of aluminium, magnesium, and other materials for the aerospace industry, to an accuracy of ±0.02 mm. Thanks to our combination of precision extrusion, machining, surface treatment, and assembly, we can reduce total production time, which is certainly essential for the aerospace industry. Since we produce the whole component, we also assume responsibility for the components we deliver. We have already supplied customers in the aerospace industry such as Airbus, Stelia, FACC, and Liebherr.

Coordination of extrusion, machining, and surface treatment

Over the years, we have developed to become an efficient processor of highly accurate and complex components for the aerospace industry. Through our knowledge and experience of the aerospace industry, we know what works and what doesn't. This enables us to make significant improvements to aerospace components. The way in which we coordinate the extrusion process, processing, and surface treatment is a very important aspect in this regard. If the extrusion can be produced accurately from the start, we save considerable machining time. Experience has taught us which minimum wall thicknesses are needed for extrusion profiles when machining various materials.
Complete aerospace components

We write the software and make our own moulds for the CNC machines. Every profile is unique and often requires a specific processing technique, especially for visible surfaces. We therefore use CAD/CAM programs such as Solid Works, Solid Edge, and Unigraphics. YueFeng makes life easier for its aerospace customers by delivering a complete component. This is why we have special techniques available in house for the aerospace industry. These techniques include assembling, bending, brushing, belt grinding, sealing, soldering, welding, and masking. Our knowledge and experience enable us to use and combine the right technologies for each aerospace product.
An example of a component for the aerospace industry

For one of our customers we are making the housing for an aircraft's operating system. As the conductivity of electricity is a very important aspect, the customer wanted the product to be made from one piece where possible and contain a minimum number of joints. The customer originally made the product from bent sheet material to which various parts were then attached. As this involved a lot of manual work and assembly work, no two products were completely identical, and the product contained many joints. In close consultation with the engineers, we looked at the possibility of making the housing with a combination of extrusion and processing methods. This led to a creative solution comprising three extrusion parts that fit together seamlessly by means of a dovetail joint and to which only four separate components are attached. Together with the customer we developed a stable process that produces identical products and significantly limits assembly time. This results in a better end product at reduced costs.
Alloys for the aerospace industry

6061, 6082, and 7075 alloys for the aerospace industry

Choosing the right alloys, whether aluminium or magnesium, is crucial for achieving the best end result. Numerous factors play a role. The key question is: Where and for what purpose is the aerospace customer going to use the components?

Alloys for the aerospace industry

Many aerospace customers ask for a specific alloy when placing an order. We then always respond with the following counter-question: Why do you want to make the product specifically with this alloy? Another alloy might be a better choice to consider for the aerospace industry.
Choosing alloys for the aerospace industry and other sectors depends on several factors, the most important of which is the purpose of the product. This key question then leads on to other further questions:
-How strong does the final product need to be?
-Is the component going to be visible or not? In other words: Is it important that the surface looks good?
-How important is the elasticity?
-Does it need to be corrosion resistant?
-Is the conductivity of heat and/or electricity an important consideration?
-In which temperature will the end product be used?

The answers to these questions from our aerospace customers are important to be able to choose the right alloys. Another factor also plays a role: the construction of the product. Complex products with, for example, small cores, thin wall thicknesses, and narrow tolerances are not possible to make with a hard and less malleable alloy.

6061, 6082, and 7075 alloys for the aerospace industry

There are hundreds of aluminium alloys. YueFeng offers a standard range of fourteen aluminium alloys with which we produce more than 95% of our products. Our standard range consists of alloys from the following series: 1xxx, 5xxx, 6xxx, and 7xxx.

The 6xxx series
These alloys contain silicon and magnesium. We work with the following alloys: 6060, 6063, 6005A, 6061, and 6082. We also work with the following specials: 6066 and 6463. In general, the more magnesium and the more silicon that are added to the aluminium, the stronger the end product will be. These alloys are frequently chosen as they have good weldability, corrosion resistance, machinability, anodizability, and electrical conductivity. 6061 and 6082 are alloys commonly used in the aerospace industry because of their extra strength. These are alloys that are prescribed by the aviation authorities. These alloys are particularly used by Airbus and Boeing for aircraft interiors.

The 7xxx series
Our standard range includes 7020, 7022, and 7075 from the 7xxx series. As well as aluminium, the 7020 consists of magnesium and zinc. Copper is also added to the 7022 and 7075. These alloys can be hardened and are some of the strongest we have. However, once again, they have reduced malleability and are therefore not suitable for complex products that require high precision. 7075 is a very strong alloy that is commonly used in the aerospace industry for structural parts.

Quality and documents: AS 9100
YueFeng Aluminium produces high-quality extrusion profiles. To do this, we not only carry out a process control but also a strict product control. We know that it is very important to draw up the documents according to AS 9100. AS 9100 certification YueFeng possesses the AS 9100 quality certification for the aerospace industry. This certification is also known by the name 'EN 9100'. In addition to this, we also have the Airbus certificate. YueFeng is part of the listed Aalberts Industries. www.profiles-aluminum.com
