Rusal has updated its climate strategy up to 2035 and clearly defined its long-term goals until 2050.
This strategy was officially reviewed and approved by the company's board of directors on June 30, 2025. The new version of this document fully aligns with the latest standards set by the Aluminum Stewardess Initiative (ASI), covering the entire industrial chain from bauxite mining, alumina refining, electrolytic aluminum smelting to aluminum product manufacturing. According to the updated requirements, all production bases of the company that have been certified by the ASI standard must follow a clear decarbonization path and commit to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
The new version of the strategy sets higher requirements for greenhouse gas reduction. To achieve this goal. Rusal will further strengthen the construction of a circular economy on the basis of continuously promoting multiple measures, including adopting the best available technologies, improving energy efficiency, industrializing the application of inert anode technology, and increasing the utilization of recycled raw materials. At the same time, the company will offset its carbon footprint through climate projects outside its operational scope to fulfill its overall carbon reduction commitment.
IrinaBakhtina, the Chief Sustainability Officer of Rusal, said: "Rusal is one of the earliest enterprises in the global aluminum industry to incorporate climate responsibility into its development strategy." The updated "Climate Strategy 2035" was formulated based on extensive consultation with industry partners and experts, fully integrating international advanced experience and actively responding to the new expectations of the international market for sustainable development.
She added, "Nowadays, the climate agenda at the national level in Russia is increasingly systematized, and voluntary mechanisms are gradually being incorporated into a standardized regulatory framework." Rusal is actively researching green finance mechanisms, promoting the application of emission reduction technologies, and continuously enhancing the company's sustainable competitive edge in the global market.
For production facilities that have not yet been included in the ASI certification scope, including non-aluminum business-related units, Rusal will take the national strategy as a guide and steadily advance carbon reduction efforts, aligning with the national strategic goal of "striving to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060".
