Mexico has lifted tariffs on aluminum imports in response to a shortage

May 10, 2024
Due to material shortages in the automotive and electronics industries, Mexico removed tariffs on aluminum imports from countries without trade agreements. According to a decree published on Wednesday, Mexico removed tariffs of up to 35 percent on aluminum that it had imposed since late April. The Mexican government's explanation for this decision is that there is no domestic production of unprocessed non-alloyed or alloyed aluminum. "In countries that have signed international trade treaties with Mexico, the supply of these commodities is insufficient to meet the required supply of industries such as the automotive industry, auto parts and electronics." The decree reads.
