According to foreign media reports, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced a rescue package last Friday aimed at saving Tomago Aluminium—the country's largest aluminium smelter—which is currently in financial distress. The smelter, majority-owned by Rio Tinto, has an existing power contract that expires in 2028.
In October, the company warned that the Tomago smelter could be forced to shut down if it fails to secure a new energy supply at a reasonable price.
