B.C., Canada: Confident in exploring other aluminum markets outside the United States
February 14, 2025
Ravi Kahlon, who is in charge of coordinating British Columbia's response to the threat of U.S. tariffs, said on Monday that aluminum smelter operators in the northern part of the province are confident of finding markets outside the United States for their products.
British Columbia Premier David Eby recently met with Rio Tinto, Kahlon said. The company is "very confident" it will be able to find new markets "fairly quickly" for aluminum produced at its Kitimat plant.
Kahlon said that since U.S. President Donald Trump proposed tariffs, the government has been working with companies like Rio Tinto on how to shift the market for products from British Columbia to other regions.
He said that while the US tariffs will have an impact in the "short term", the province is confident that new buyers will be found, especially as demand for aluminium is growing.
