Comparison of aluminum alloy pallets compared to plastic pallets and wooden pallets

August 27, 2025
As a new type of pallet material, aluminum alloy pallet has significant advantages over traditional wooden pallets and plastic pallets in terms of performance, economy and environmental protection, as follows:

1. Long service life and reduce long-term costs
The service life of aluminum alloy pallets can usually reach 10-15 years (or even longer), which is much higher than that of wooden pallets (1-3 years, prone to damage due to moisture, insects, and collisions) and plastic pallets (3-5 years, prone to failure due to aging, low-temperature embrittlement, and heavy load deformation). Although the initial purchase cost of aluminum alloy pallets is high, the comprehensive cost is significantly lower than that of wooden pallets (which need to be replaced frequently) and plastic pallets (which require high maintenance/replacement costs after aging) in the long-term service cycle.

2. Ultra-high durability and strong damage resistance
Physical damage resistance: Aluminum alloy has high strength, high toughness, excellent impact resistance and wear resistance, can withstand frequent forklift collisions, stacking heavy pressure, and is not prone to the problems of "cracking, corner dropping, nail loosening" of wooden pallets or "chipping and deformation" of plastic pallets.
Environmental erosion resistance: After surface anodizing, spraying and other treatments, aluminum alloy pallets are resistant to water, moisture, acid and alkali corrosion, and can adapt to harsh environments such as moisture (such as cold storage, aquatic workshops), high salt (such as ports, shipping), dusty (such as manufacturing workshops), while wooden pallets are prone to moisture rot, insect moth and mold, and plastic pallets are easy to age and degrade in long-term exposure to chemicals or high temperature environments.

3. Strong load-bearing capacity and higher stability
The structural strength of aluminum alloy pallets is far better than that of wooden pallets and plastic pallets, with a static load bearing of up to 5-10 tons and a dynamic load bearing capacity of 1-3 tons, and it is not easy to deform under long-term heavy loads, and the stability is extremely strong. Compared with:
The load-bearing capacity of wooden pallets is usually 1-3 tons, and the strength will drop significantly after moisture, and it is easy to break due to uneven local force;
Plastic pallets are mostly load-bearing 1-2 tons, and they are prone to creep deformation under long-term heavy loads or low temperature environments, affecting stability.

4. Environmental protection and recyclability, in line with the needs of green development
Resource sustainability: Aluminum alloy pallets are 100% recyclable and reused, and can be remelted and processed into new pallets or other aluminum products after recycling, without waste pollution; while wooden pallets rely on wood cutting, destroy forest resources, and are prone to mold pollution after disposal; Plastic pallets (especially ordinary PE/PP materials) are mostly disposable or difficult-to-degrade materials, which are prone to harmful gases and have low recycling value.
No harmful substances: There are no harmful volatiles such as formaldehyde and glue in the production process of aluminum alloy pallets, and they will not produce germs due to mildew like wooden pallets, or release plasticizers like inferior plastic pallets, which is more suitable for food, medicine and other industries with strict hygiene requirements.

5. Easy to clean and maintain, excellent hygiene
The surface of aluminum alloy is smooth and porous-free, not easy to hide dirt and dirt, can be directly rinsed with high-pressure water guns, disinfectants, and even resist high-temperature steam disinfection, which can effectively avoid the problem of bacteria, mold or impurities hidden in the gaps of wooden pallets, and is also better than plastic pallets (some plastic surfaces are easy to absorb oil stains and are difficult to clean). This feature makes it irreplaceable in hygiene-sensitive scenarios such as food processing, pharmaceutical warehousing, and cold chain logistics.

6. Lightweight design to improve transportation efficiency
Although the density of aluminum alloy is only 1/3 of that of steel, although it is slightly higher than that of plastic (PP density is about 0.9g/cm³, aluminum density is 2.7g/cm³), through structural optimization (such as hollow profiles, grid design), the weight of aluminum alloy pallets can be controlled within a reasonable range (usually 20-40kg), which is much lighter than steel pallets and lighter than solid wood pallets with the same load-bearing capacity (solid wood pallets are mostly 30-50kg). The lightweight characteristics can reduce the ineffective load during transportation, reduce logistics energy consumption, and improve the efficiency of forklift handling.

7. High safety and reduced operational risks
Aluminum alloy pallets are free of the "burrs, exposed nails" of wooden pallets that will not scratch the operator or goods during handling; It will not break and produce sharp fragments under low temperature or impact like plastic pallets, which greatly reduces the safety hazards in storage and transportation. In addition, aluminum alloys are non-absorbent and non-combustible (melting point up to 660°C), making them safer in scenarios with high fire protection requirements (such as chemical warehouses and dangerous goods storage) compared to wooden pallets (flammable) and plastic pallets (easy to soften and burn at high temperatures).

8. Adapt to extreme environments and have a wider range of application scenarios
Aluminum alloy trays have excellent high and low temperature resistance (stable performance in -40°C to 120°C environment), and can be used for a long time in extreme environments such as cold storage (low temperature), baking workshop (high temperature), outdoor open-air storage (wind and sun), while wooden pallets are easy to become brittle at low temperatures and dry crack at high temperatures, and plastic pallets are easy to become brittle and fragmented below -20°C, and easy to soften and deform above 60°C.

In summary, aluminum alloy pallets are gradually replacing wooden pallets and plastic pallets in industrial warehousing, logistics and transportation, food and medicine and other fields with core advantages such as "long life, high durability, strong load-bearing, easy cleaning, environmental protection and safety", especially suitable for scenarios with high requirements for long-term cost, stability, and hygiene.
