Is aluminium alloy resistant to acid or alkali

August 22, 2025
Generally speaking, the acid resistance of aluminium alloys is better than their alkali resistance.

I. Overview of the Corrosion Resistance of Aluminum Alloys

Aluminum alloy is a metallic material with excellent corrosion resistance. Its corrosion resistance mainly depends on the types and contents of alloying elements, the surface condition of the aluminum alloy, and the influence of the usage environment. The corrosion resistance of aluminium alloys mainly falls into three categories: acidic, alkaline and neutral. In different environments, the corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys exhibits distinct characteristics.

Ii. Acid resistance of Aluminum alloys

Aluminum alloy has good acid resistance and can be used for a long time in weakly acidic environments. For instance, it can be safely used in acidic media such as beverages, fruit juices, and vinegar. However, in a strongly acidic environment, the corrosiveness of aluminum alloys will increase, leading to a decline in their performance. In addition, in an oxidizing acidic environment, aluminum alloys are also prone to form oxide films, which affect their corrosion resistance.

Iii. Alkali Resistance of Aluminum Alloys

Compared with acid resistance, the alkali resistance of aluminum alloy is slightly inferior. In alkaline media, aluminium alloys will be corroded and dissolved, leading to a decline in material performance. In strongly alkaline media, the corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys will be greatly challenged.

Iv. Conclusion

To sum up, the acid resistance of aluminium alloy is far superior to its alkali resistance. However, in the actual application process, it is necessary to select the appropriate aluminum alloy material based on the specific usage environment and requirements. If it needs to be used in strongly acidic and strongly alkaline environments, special aluminum alloy materials with better corrosion resistance should be selected, and special surface treatment should be carried out to enhance its acid and alkali resistance. At the same time, during the usage process, it is necessary to avoid situations such as surface wear, scratches and damage to the oxide film of the material to ensure the good performance of the aluminum alloy material.
