According to Constellium's official website, on July 23, Constellium announced that its Muscle Shoals plant in Alabama has been selected by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to invest $23 million in the reconstruction of the Direct Chill Aluminum Casting Center.
The company said it will use the funds to install advanced casting equipment at the dismantled casting center, aiming to increase annual casting capacity to 300 million pounds, increase plant recycling production, reduce primary metal usage, and provide the U.S. industry with an additional, self-sufficient domestic supply of rolled aluminum ingots.
Ken Lian Aluminum said that in recent years, the United States domestic casting rolled ingot production capacity is difficult to supply the growing demand for aluminum rolled products in many manufacturing industries, forcing the United States rolling plant to rely on imported plate ingot to meet customer demand. Flat-rolled aluminum products, such as aluminum sheets and plates, are critical materials for the defense, aerospace, automotive, packaging and transportation industries.
The Kenlian Aluminum Muscle Shoals plant is a major supplier of aluminum sheets to the packaging and automotive markets. The plant can produce more than 1 billion pounds of finished aluminum rolls per year. The Muscle Shoals facility also operates a recycling center that recycles the equivalent of 20 billion aluminum cans a year.
