According to foreign media reports, NALCO, the national aluminium company of India, is seeking to increase its production of alumina and aluminium through brownfield expansion in order to gain recognition from Maharatna.

Brijendra Pratap Singh, chairman and managing director of NALCO, said ata press conference on Tuesday: "Driven by the booming infrastructure, power grid and transportation industries, India's aluminum consumption is expected to reach 7 to 8 million tons per year by 2030." The company is ready to meet domestic demand by increasing production.

Singh said that the company will invest 171.63 billion Indian rupees to increase the annual production capacity of the smelter by 500,000 tons. An investment of 120 billion Indian rupees will be made to increase the power generation capacity by 1,080 MW. Among them, the land acquisition work for the smelting plant project has entered the final stage.

In addition, NALCO is planning to invest 56.77 billion Indian rupees to expand its alumina refining potential by building the fifth stream alumina refinery (with an annual capacity of 1 million tons), and is also investing 19.61 billion Indian rupees to extract bauxite from the Pottangi mine.

The company also plans to tap into the huge potential for aluminium consumption in the UK. On July 24th, the United Kingdom and India officially signed the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).
