The rise in aluminum prices in the United States has stimulated Canada's aluminum exports to the United States

October 19, 2025
On Wednesday, October 15th, analysts said that in recent weeks, Canadian aluminium producers have increased their shipments to the US market as aluminium prices in the US spot market have risen, highlighting the impact of the 50% aluminium import tariff imposed by Trump earlier this year.

The aluminum tariffs imposed by the United States starting in June "aim to boost domestic aluminum production and encourage investment in the capacity of metals used in the power, construction and packaging industries."

At first, Canadian producers transferred aluminium to Europe. But as aluminium inventories, which serve as a buffer for American consumers, decline, this flow is reversing. Jean Simard, the CEO of the Aluminium Association of Canada, said, "Aluminium deliveries to the United States have picked up, but we haven't reached full speed yet."

Jean Simard refers to the trade flows in September and October, which have not yet appeared in the customs data.

According to Data from Trade Data Monitor, a data provider, the United States imported 2.7 million tons of aluminium from Canada in 2024, accounting for 70% of the total aluminium imports in the United States that year.

In the spot market, American consumers have to pay a premium per ton of aluminium over the LME price, as well as taxes, freight charges and handling costs.

On October 6th, the US aluminium premium once reached a record high of $0.77 per pound or $1,697 per ton, having risen by 250% since January.

"The aluminium premium in the Midwestern United States actually fully reflects a 50% tariff," said David Wilson, an analyst at BNP Paribas.

The easing pressure on Canadian aluminium producers has in turn led to a rise in the European aluminium premium to $266 per ton, which has increased by 46% since June.

Data released by Trade Data Monitor shows that from January to August, Canada's exports of unwrought aluminium to the United States decreased by 22% year-on-year to 1.4 million tons.

Data also shows that 123,474 tons of aluminium were shipped from Canada to the United States in August, a 51% decrease from the level in March.

Meanwhile, from January to August 2025, Canada's aluminum shipments to Europe increased by 94% year-on-year to 189,320 tons.

In the United States, Comex aluminum inventories stand at 7,661 tons, having dropped by 73% since January.

Edgardo Gelsomino, head of aluminium research at Wood Mackenzie, said: "If there are no new trade agreements, there is still room for the aluminium premium in the Midwestern United States to rise further."
