The United States has announced the expansion of the scope of tariffs on imported steel and aluminum
August 18, 2025
The U.S. Department of Commerce stated in a Federal Register announcement released that evening that the Bureau of Industry and Security has added 407 product codes to the U.S. Harmonized Tariff Schedule, and these products will be subject to additional tariffs due to the steel and aluminum components they contain.
The announcement stated that the non-steel and non-aluminum parts of these products will be subject to the tariff rates imposed by President Trump on goods from specific countries. The expanded tariff list will come into effect officially on August 18th.
On June 3 local time, the White House of the United States issued a statement saying that US President Trump announced that the tariffs on imported steel, aluminum and their derivatives would be raised from 25% to 50%. This tariff policy will come into effect at 00:01 a.m. Eastern Time on June 4, 2025.
