360/5000 China has filed a WTO complaint against Canada over tariffs on electric vehicles, steel and aluminum products
September 9, 2024
According to the website of the Ministry of Commerce, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Commerce answered reporters' questions on China's WTO lawsuit against Canada's tax measures on electric vehicles and steel and aluminum products on September 6.
Q: It is learnt that China has filed a case against Canada's tariffs on electric vehicles and steel and aluminum products at the WTO. Could you give us more details?
A: On September 6, China submitted a request to the Canadian side at the WTO for consultation on Canada's additional tax measures on electric vehicles and steel and aluminum products.
The Canadian side, in defiance of WTO rules and in violation of its WTO commitments, plans to impose a 100 percent and 25 percent surcharge on Chinese electric vehicles and steel and aluminum products, respectively. This is a typical act of unilateralism and trade protectionism, which seriously undermines the rules-based multilateral trading system and disrupts the global industrial and supply chains of electric vehicles, steel and aluminum. China is firmly opposed to this.
China is a firm supporter and important contributor to the multilateral trading system. We urge the Canadian side to abide by WTO rules and immediately correct its wrong practices.
