Canada will impose tariffs on Chinese electric cars, steel and aluminium
August 28, 2024
Following similar moves announced by the United States and the European Union, Canada said it would impose a 100% tariff on imports of electric vehicles (EVs) from China. The country also plans to impose 25 percent tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum.
Canada's tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles will come into effect on October 1, and on steel and aluminum on October 15.
In May, the United States said it would quadruple tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles to 100 percent, and the European Union later announced plans to impose tariffs of up to 36.3 percent on Chinese electric vehicles.
Canadian tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles will include electric vehicles produced by Tesla at its Shanghai factory. It is reported that Chinese car brands are not yet popular in Canada, and only some car brands such as BYD have entered the country's market.
