The UK is expected to miss the July 9th deadline for steel and aluminum tariff negotiations, but it still has the hope of reaching an agreement before the end of the month

July 10, 2025
According to British government and industry insiders, the UK will not be able to reach an agreement with the US on steel and aluminum trade deals within this week, missing the July 9 deadline set by the White House. Previously, Trump insisted that the UK must finalize the metal trade agreement with the US by July 9, otherwise the 25% steel and aluminum tariffs currently paid by the UK would be raised to 50%, which is applicable to most other countries. If an agreement is reached, these tariffs might even be reduced to zero. However, despite weeks of negotiations between the two sides and their commitment at the end of June that an agreement was about to be reached, the talks have remained deadlocked and have not advanced for a long time. Despite this, government insiders disclosed that they still expect an agreement to be reached by the end of this month and believe that the White House will not immediately impose a 50% tariff in the short term.
