White House officials: Tariffs on specific countries will not be imposed cumulatively
July 8, 2025
On July 7 local time, a White House official said when asked about tariffs on Japan and South Korea that the United States would not impose tariffs on specific countries on top of industry tariffs.
According to the trade policy tracking agency Global Trade Alert, "tariff superposition" refers to the application of multiple tariffs on the same imported product, resulting in "cumulative tariffs".
The Global Trade Alert indicates that the Executive Order 14289 signed by US President Trump on May 2nd established the relevant rules for tariff superposition, stipulating that "certain tariff mechanisms take precedence over others and cannot be superimposed."
